How To Underline Text In Canva

Underlining text is one of those things that we do in documents all the time without thinking about it.  But you might also want to know how to underline text in Canva to bring that same emphasis to your designs.  The good news is that there’s one ultra-simple way and also another way to make underlining more of a design feature.

How to underline text in Canva the easiest way

Up until recently, you could only use the second option as a way to underline text in Canva.  But thankfully, they have added the most common and easiest way to underline something to their editor now.

Simply select the text you want to underline and press CTRL+U on PC or Command+U on a Mac.  This will underline the words with a standard plain line that matches with the text.  It is exactly the same function as you’d use with a word processing document.

If you have letters that sit below the line, it will accommodate them so that the line looks natural – and rather smart!

Should you decide that no, actually I don’t want to underline that word or sentence, you can just highlight it again with your mouse and press the same command to remove the underlining.

Adding fancy underlining

The older way to add underlining to text in Canva is still around and now works if you want to do something a little more with the underlining of text or you want to add lines under the text as a design feature.

If you go into the menu and select Elements then Lines, you will see a range of straight, dotted and dash lines. These can be used to underline text or a text box.

Select the line and move it into place. It will remain over the top of any lowercase letters rather than adapting to them as the underline function does.

You can change the thickness of the line with the line weight option in the top corner. You can also change the type of line and add line ends here.

Another good option with creating lines like this is that you can move them away from the text to make them into a feature. You can also change the colour and even add more than one line.

Making the most of underlining

Underlining text is a great way to add emphasis to words or sentences. It can be used as a design feature when lines are used separately from the text so there’s also lots of ways to make your graphics look interesting and eye-catching.
