How to Create an eBook in Canva

Canva is best known for creating graphics for social media and your blog but that’s not all it can do.  One of the clever things you can make for your business with it is an eBook.  Let’s take a look at how it is done.

What kind of eBooks can you create?

Canva supplies a range of different templates that can be used to make eBooks of different forms.  Plus there are some amazing templates available, both free and paid, from different designers that can make the process simple.  And you can always create everything from scratch with the tutorials I’ve created to use the different elements within Canva!

Some uses for eBooks include:

  • Email marketing freebies that people get when they join your list
  • Small digital products that teach someone how to do something
  • Homeschooling tools to help educate your kids
  • Freebies to give away for charity and voluntary work to increase awareness of the cause
  • Products to upload to Amazon to sell including traditional styles of books and more

How to create an eBook in Canva

To start with, choose the size you want the eBook to be.  The two most common are US letter size and A4.  Choose a blank template in the size you require and open it in Canva.

Next, look at eBook templates inside Canva to see if you want to use these or import something you have bought.  Some of Canva’s templates are single pages that can be combined.  This one I’m demonstrating has 5 pages in a theme to make it easier to create.

Start with a cover page that tells someone what the eBook is called, adds your name and maybe your website.  You can change colours as you go but I like to wait until the whole eBook is laid out then change them all at once.

Next, you might want to include a contents page.  This is great to show what’s inside and can be nice to use in promotional graphics.  Click +Add Page at the bottom then select the template you want.  Make changes to the text to reflect the eBook you have planned.

You may want to add a page about you in next or a quote to give the person a bit of inspiration before they start reading.

Then you are into the main part of the eBook.  You can add as many pages as you want.  Use templates or construct them from scratch based on the content you have created to go into them.

This template has two content pages.  The first has a single image at the top and two columns of text underneath.

The other has a photo background with a single column of text to one side.  If you didn’t like it, you could easily remove the background image, duplicate the text and create a text-heavy version.

Keep building your pages until you have all of the content in the format you want.  Then if you haven’t already changed colours to your brand colour, do this.

Finishing the eBook

There are a few things you might want to do to finish the eBook.  One is to make sure if there are page numbers, they are correct.  Then go back and add the information to the content page.

You might also want to add your business name and copyright information to the bottom of each page.

You can even add a final page with a call to action to prompt the person to do something.  You can add links to text by highlighting them then clicking the link icon on the menu.  So you could link to a related blog post, another product or just your website.

Downloading the eBook

Once you are completely happy with the content and formatting of your eBook, you are ready to download.  Hit the download button and choose a print-quality PDF with all the pages.  This will create a single file with all parts of the eBook flowing one after another.

You can then upload this wherever you want to sell, give away or allow people to print it.

Creating a quality eBook

There are loads of templates in Canva to help make an eBook and plenty of ways to use the different elements to create something bespoke if you need it.  Then you have a high-quality product that can be printed, given away or sold.
