Creating the Ghost Mannequin Effect: Photography Tutorial

One of the most popular ways to photograph clothing is on a mannequin. This allows the clothes to be displayed in their natural shape, and also makes it easy to take close-up shots. However, mannequin photography can be somewhat tricky, as the mannequins can often look lifeless and artificial. One way to avoid this is to use a ghost mannequin. Ghost mannequins are mannequins that have been carefully edited out of the photo, leaving only the clothes behind. This creates a more realistic and natural-looking image, and can be a great way to show off your clothing. If you’re not sure how to create a ghost mannequin effect, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. We recommend using a form-fitting mannequin for best results. You can find these at most fabric stores, however it does mean you need a variety of them depending on which clothing items you wish to display.
Then use the following guide to help.

Mannequin Styling Tips

  • Make sure your manny is clean and dust free.  Wipe it down if needed before dressing it.
  • Fit is just as important for men as it is with women. Without a perfect fit, clothes can look overwhelming and uncomfortable on the figure- so make sure you’re paying attention when picking out what will best showcase your mannequin’s features!
  • Use binder clips to get the clothes to fit right. Pins can also be helpful for more delicate adjustments, just make sure they won’t damage the clothing!
  • Add the right amount of accessories. If you use too many, your clothes will get lost, but if you don’t incorporate enough, then your outfit won’t feel complete. Shoes, bags and jewellery are an easy way to pull every piece together in an elegant and put-together way.

Step two: Take your photo.

Make sure to take a few photos from different angles so you have plenty to choose from later. (Making sure you get shot of the inside of the collar or waist line so you can edit it in later.
