7 Tips on how to have a successful photography project

Getting started with any photography project can daunting at first.

  • Where do you start?
  • What should I take photos of?
  • Is my phone good enough?
  • Am I good enough?
  • Everyone’s already done it!

Yes, I have inner gremlins too, but the reality is that if you don’t try you’ll guaranteed to fail.

Here my 7 ways to ensure you’re next photography project is successful:

#1 Pick a photography project that makes you excited

There are so many different photography project ideas for you to choose from. If you’re looking for photography projects for beginners, who want to learn their camera, then I recommend doing a photo challenge like the 52 Week Photo Challenge. It allow you to build your photography habit slowing without too much pressure, while exploring different aspects of photography.

If you’re looking to master an aspect of photography then, I’d recommend you pick a photography theme like self portrait, day in life or piece of gear.

#2 Writing down your goal

goal journal

You are 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down.

Why?

Because by Writing your goals down not only does it force you to get clear on what, exactly, it is that you want to accomplish, but doing so plays a part in motivating you to complete the tasks necessary for your success. If you add why you want to achieve it, your chance of success dramatically rises.

#3 Having a set accountability you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%.

#4 You need to build a habit.

Yes, you have a busy life and if you don’t schedule this in, than guess what it won’t happen. You’ll remember when it’s too late and feel too tired and defeated.

Don’t wait. Add it to your daily to dos.

#Pro Tip

No pain no gain. No way!
We’ve all been there, we know exactly what you need to do, and yet it simply doesn’t get done.

Why?

It’s normally one of two things. You’ve either; bitten off more than you chew or you’re not satisfied.

Maybe you need to declare brutal consequences for each week you miss, or maybe you’ll reward yourself for each milestone on your journey.

#5 Organise you project

You’ll feel better in you can see your project growing and not let it become a headache. Pick one memory card / folder that’s just for you’re project and try to keep your files organised. If they’re taking up too much space, remember Amazon Prime members have unlimited photo storage and you could be brave and share them on a platform of your choice. I prefer Instagram.

#6 Set reminders

Yes, I have a kid too. I know all too well that moment at the end of the day when you finally sit down and relax (knowing how little time you have before going to bed) and then you remember you haven’t taken a photo and know it just feels too much. The real trick is to not let it get this far. If you did #2 correctly, you’ll have worked out how or more importantly when you’re aiming to achieve this each day. So set a reminder on your phone to make sure you don’t forget.

#7 Don’t wait for perfect conditions

This project is not about perfection, but about mastering what you have and how you can control it. Perfection doesn’t mean you’re mastered it, and imperfection doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Learning is a journey and there’s nothing better than seeing how far you’ve come by the end of your successful photography project.
