How To Upload Fonts To Canva
Canva has a huge range of fonts built into it, even more, if you have Canva Pro. But there’s one other really handy feature that means you can add fonts that you own as well. Let’s look at how to upload fonts to Canva and where to find some great ones if you need to add them to your collection.
How to find fonts to use in Canva
If you don’t already have some fonts you want to upload to Canva, there are lots of great places to find them.
Google Fonts
One of the best places is Google Fonts. These are free fonts you can download and use in any commercial project and many of them will be useable on your website too. Once you have download the font as a zip file, then you can follow the next step to upload it to Canva.
Font Squirrel
Font Squirrel has a mixture of free and paid fonts that can be easily downloaded and then added to Canva. You can spot the free ones that show as ‘Download OTF’ while the paid ones will show ‘Download OTF (Offsite)’. You’ll get a zip file to download and open.
Fontbundles
Fontbundles has a huge selection of paid fonts but also offer free fonts that you can download. There’s a free font of the week and often bundles of fonts for free or very low cost. Just check the licensing to make sure you can use it commercially.
Creative Market
Like Fontbundles, Creative Market have an extensive range of fonts that you can buy. But each week they also offer six items for free which usually includes at least one font. Again, check that you have the right license with the font to use in commercial projects.
How to upload fonts to Canva
Once you have found the fonts you love, it is time to upload them to Canva. You do need to have a Canva Pro account for this.
Go to your brand kit area on the main menu. Here you’ll see any brand kits you have created and where you’ll see fonts as you upload them.
Click the ‘upload a font’ option and find the font file on your computer then select this. The font will need to be in one of three formats:
- OTF file
- TTF file
- WOFF file
If the font is still in a zip file, unzip it first so you can access the file you need.
You’ll get a message to confirm that you have the right to use it for your ‘intended purposes’ – in other words, that it has a commercial license for you to use in your business projects. Click yes if this is correct.
Once the font is uploaded, it will show on the alphabetical list of fonts.
If you want to choose it as a brand font, you can then select it by clicking the pen icon for the brand and assigning it and setting the desired default size.
Using uploaded fonts in designs
Once you have uploaded the font to Canva, you can use it in all of the normal places that fonts appear.
When you create a text box in a design, the font will be in the list available in the drop-down menu. You can even type the name to find it quickly.
Go further with fonts
Being able to upload your own fonts to Canva means you can customise your designs to a new level. Plus you can use fonts that you use on your website to add that brand voice in more places.
