Try Nature Photo Walks

Spring is the perfect time to practice nature photography & landscape photography. Head out for a photo walk to the local park and see what you can find. It’s amazing what you can find in your own garden, let alone your neighbourhood. From the same location at different times, the same subject at different locations, or simply go exploring to see what you find.

Early Sunrise

Start the day off right, and capture the sunrise chasing off the morning fog. This is more about the contrast of sun rays and shadows. If you want to learn how to capture sun rays through trees, you’re going to need: yep you guessed it the sun, some trees and either dust or moisture in the air.

How to capture sun rays through trees:

  1. Find your location and set up your composition using a tripod for those lower shutter speeds.
  2. Use a small aperture (high f number) so that you can focus on them as well as your subject making them more defined.
  3. Consider using a polarising filter, spot metering or exposure compensation to help with that tricky exposure.

Telephoto lens compress the sun rays making them more obvious

Dew Drops

Capture the detail of the morning dew on the plants and grass, remember to get close and fill the frame. Take it to the next level and try a little macro photography (1:1 or even 2:1)

Depending on how many drops you have you might want to consider trying stack focusing.

Cherry blossoms

There’s something about the pinks and white’s of cherry blossom that spring spring alive. In Japan they symbolise a time of renewal and mortality. As their bloom only lasts two weeks before they start for fall again. So make you catch them while they last. But it’s Macon, Georgia that holds the most cherry blossom trees, with over 350,000. It seems to be a highly regarded tree is several countries. A calm blue sky creates a soothing plain backdrop for cherry blossom.

Lens balls

If you’re feeling a little more creative and want a photography challenge. Spring is a time for reflection, and I like to think about that literally. Use a lens ball to help frame and emphasis the subject to getting creative with reflections or try a water reflection.

Wildlife photography

Wildlife photography is so much fun. It allows you to practice all the basics of photography with next level gear. Wildlife has a tendency to move quite quickly, so you’ll need a camera that can keep up with them. So how fast is good for fast action camera?

Realistically, you’ll need to crank up that shutter speed to a minimum of 1/1250, or even higher if light allows.

For beginners out there, I recommend Tv/S camera mode to make the whole process a lot easier. Next, you’ll need to pick the right focus mode for the situation. Try AF-S for perched animals and AF-C if they’re not.

If you want to get up close and personal you’ll need a telephoto lens. (Upto 300mm will do the job nicely)

Birds

Whether you grab a cuppa and bird watch from the comfort of your kitchen or head out for a walk. Finches are a great spot this time of year, however if you want to grab a snap of them you’ll need a few things you’ll need to remember.

Remember to…

  • Crank up that shutter speed and focus on the eye.
  • Choose your composition and lighting to help tell the story.
  • Getting low – Walking birds like chics
  • Leave space for movement – Flight, eating, landing.
  • Using burst mode or even take stills via video to make sure you never miss the shot.
  • Get creative with reflections

Insect and Macro Photography

Getting up close and detailed shots of simply insects that live in your garden. You’ll need to think about macro lens, minimum focus length and how close you can actually get to the animals. I’ve found sitting next to a lovely flowerbed works, for bees and butterflies. If you want to get dirty with the worms and beetles then get a young kid to join you. They always seem to find them 😉

Spring family picture ideas

Are you looking for fun ways to document your family spring break? Looking for spring break picture ideas or finalising your spring photoshoot ideas?

Adventure Outdoors

Documenting great days out is all about see the moments you want to capture. Make sure you switch up your perspectives often and capture the whole story, ie the environment.

Flower fields

A person favourite of mine. I love finding the best bluebells and lavender fields and occasionally we’ll even do the confetti fields. For those wetter days, you can try indoor flowers like a succulents, just watch those highlights and reflections. Watching the kids explore the flowers and be be one with nature is a privilege and they seem to really love it as well.

April showers

April rain is great for water splash photography of all kinds. Not feeling the great outdoors, snuggle up cosy with the best spring reads or floral flat lays (These are great for backgrounds and social media posts).

Which ever you choose you try. I’d love to see them, so make you tag me @Robynsacademy.
